Kaspersky Labs Discovers Malware On Brand New Netbook

Kaspersky Labs is recommending that brand new netbooks be scanned for viruses before being connected to the Internet after discovering malware on a just out of the box machine loaded with Windows XP software.
The discovery came after Kaspersky developers noticed something wrong with a new Netbook it had purchased. It was not running quite right so they did a test and sure enough, they discovered malware.
The malware had been installed at the factory through an infected USB drive. Three pieces of malware were discovered on the $499 machine, designed for the school market.
According to Computer World, Rouel Schouwenberg, a senior antivirus researcher with the Moscow-based company, said that the factory workers used the USB stick to install drivers on the Netbooks, which then infected the machines. Installed with the worm were a rootkit and a password stealer that harvests log-in credentials for online games such as World of Warcraft.
To make sure your Netbook is safe, Schouwenberg recommends customers install their security software before connecting to the Internet. Once installed, customers should go to another computer, download the latest version of the software and then install that on the new Netbook.

Rob says: SPAM, Malware it makes no difference. Until they publicly go after the people responsible, and levy heavy fines, nothing will change. It ruined email and soon it will permeate everything. This sounds like industrial sabotage.
